BACK PAIN AND SEXUALITY

Like all chronic pain, low back pain affects all aspects of our lives, including our sexuality! Generally, this effect occurs in two ways: While the pain restricts movements and makes sexual intercourse difficult, on the other hand, it can reduce the sexual response. Although it is a very important problem that needs to be addressed, people generally do not share this issue with the physician and do not ask questions because they are embarrassed. For this reason, it is beneficial to address the issue here at least. However, it should not be forgotten that the information presented is general advice, and opinions should be exchanged with the physician at the slightest doubt.

Does low back pain cause sexual distress?

Yes. We all know the famous excuse of "not tonight, darling, I have a headache". Low back pain is a public health problem that comes into our lives as much as headaches, although it is not an excuse, and negatively affects our sexual life.

The stage of excitement, on the other hand, is the period in which there is hardening (ie erection) in men and vaginal wetting in women. Pain can interrupt this stage as well. During the third stage, reaching orgasm, pain may occur due to uncontrolled movements.

Also, touches and massage can even have benefits if done properly. This phase, touching, kissing and close contact should be kept as long as possible.

What should be considered during the excitement phase where physical contact is intense?

Increased pain at this stage can ruin a bag of figs. Therefore, attention should be paid to the appropriate position and suitable sex surface. Joining on an unsuitable surface affects even the proper position. A flat surface is the best one to choose from.

Which positions do not cause problem?

Most of the lying, kneeling and sitting positions do not cause any problems if attention is paid. Use pillows that support your back. In fact, the main rule is that the individual who does not have back pain is on top. However, in cases where the painful individual is under, the space under the waist must be supported with a pillow. This greatly reduces the pain.

Can new positions be tried?

Definitely yes. Don't hesitate to try new positions as long as hey do not cause pain. However, it may take time to get used to new positions physically and psychologically.

Sex positions that do not strain the waist in low back pain
Recommended positions for women with low back pain:

1. While the woman is lying on her back, her lower back should be supported with a pillow or towel. The woman's hips and waist should be bent. The man should be careful not to put weight on the top and the woman. In this case, since both individuals are face to face, kissing is also provided.

2. The woman should lean on the bed with her elbows on her knees. The male stands at the back and should try to adjust the height with a pillow or towel placed under his knees. In this position, the woman must remain completely passive.

3. Women with low back pain due to herniated disc can be comfortable in the face down position. In the prone position, the lumbar spine is extended, that is, it bends back, so little load is placed on the spine. Therefore, it is a good position for patients with lumbar hernia. Moreover, the backward bend in the waist can be adjusted with pillows placed under the abdomen.

4. In back pains that are not related to herniated disc, sex in sitting position can be more comfortable. In this position, the man sits on the chair, and the woman is on the man. This position allows for kissing. In this position, both individuals should take care that their knees are slightly higher than the hips. It is beneficial for both of them to have a pillow under their feet.

Recommended positions for men with low back pain:

In this case, the man is on his back and his waist must be supported by a pillow or a towel. The waist is thus motionless. The woman should be on top and active. Slightly bent hips and knees of the man reduces strain on the waist. If the woman has a back pain, she should not bend her waist too much and take precautions to avoid putting too much weight on her hands and arms. The woman should relax her hip movements by keeping her knees forward.

What should be considered in the "man on the knee, woman on the back of the bed" position?

The woman's knees should be slightly higher than the hip level. For this reason, it is useful to put a pillow under your feet. A pillow can also be placed under the man's knee. The man should not bend his waist too much. If the bed is lower than the man and there is back pain, sex should be done on the table. In fact, this position can be used in painful situations in both individuals..
